About Surround Sound Setup Calculator

Calculates optimal speaker placement for home theater systems based on room dimensions, listening position, and speaker configuration. Supports 2.0 stereo through 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos layouts. Outputs X/Y/Z coordinates, angles, and distances for each speaker relative to the listener, plus acoustic treatment recommendations. Includes an SVG top-down room visualization showing speaker and listener positions.

  • Configurations: 2.0, 2.1, 3.1, 5.1, 7.1, 5.1.2 Atmos, and 7.1.4 Atmos
  • Room dimensions accept feet or meters; internal calculations convert to feet for speaker angle math
  • Optimal speaker distance derived as 30% of the room’s smaller dimension
  • Front speakers placed at ±30°, surrounds at ±110°, sides at ±90°, rears at ±150° per ITU-R standards
  • Generates acoustic treatment advice: first reflection points, bass traps, and room-ratio-specific diffusion
  • SVG room layout renders speaker positions, listener marker, and subwoofer in a scalable top-down view
  • Results exportable as JSON with full room config, speaker coordinates, and recommendations

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it determine speaker distance?
It takes 30% of the room’s smaller dimension (length or width) as the optimal radius from the listening position. This is a practical starting point—you may need to adjust based on your specific speakers and room acoustics.
Does it account for Dolby Atmos height channels?
Yes. The 5.1.2 and 7.1.4 configurations include ceiling-mounted or height speakers positioned near the room’s ceiling height minus one foot, at 45-degree angles from the listening position.
What unit system does it use?
You can enter dimensions in feet or meters. The tool converts everything to feet internally for the trigonometric calculations, then displays results in your chosen unit.
