About Aspect Ratio Calculator

Calculates the simplified aspect ratio from any width and height. Lock a ratio to auto-calculate the missing dimension when you change the other. Includes presets for common ratios (16:9, 4:3, 21:9, 1:1, 9:16) and resolution references for HD through 4K and social media formats.

 • Uses Euclidean GCD algorithm to simplify ratios to their lowest terms (e.g. 1920×1080 → 16:9)
 • Lock mode constrains dimensions to the current ratio — change width, height auto-adjusts, and vice versa
 • Visual preview box scales proportionally so you can see the shape at a glance
 • Shows total pixel count and megapixels for camera/print reference

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my ratio show large numbers instead of something like 16:9?
The calculator shows the mathematically exact simplified ratio. If your dimensions don’t divide evenly into a common ratio (e.g. 1921×1080), the GCD is 1 and you get 1921:1080. Round to the nearest standard resolution for a cleaner ratio.
What aspect ratio should I use for social media?
Instagram posts work best at 1:1 (square) or 4:5 (portrait). Stories and Reels use 9:16. YouTube thumbnails are 16:9. Twitter/X in-feed images perform well at 16:9 or 2:1. The presets panel has all of these ready to select.
