About Sales Tax Calculator

Calculates U.S. sales tax for any purchase amount using either built-in state tax rates (all 50 states + D.C. with state and average local rates) or a custom rate. Includes a comparison table of the five lowest and five highest combined tax rate states.

  • Custom rate mode overrides state lookup for precise local calculations
  • Five states with no sales tax noted: Alaska (local only), Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon
  • Rate comparison sorts all states and surfaces the five cheapest and five most expensive
  • Copy produces a formatted subtotal/tax/total receipt

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these tax rates exact for my city?
No. The local rates shown are statewide averages. Actual local rates vary by city, county, and special district. Use the custom rate input for precise calculations once you know your locality’s exact combined rate from your state’s revenue department.
Does this handle tax-exempt items?
No. It applies the full combined rate to whatever amount you enter. Many states exempt groceries, prescription drugs, or clothing below a threshold. You would need to exclude those items from the purchase amount manually.
