About Data Storage Converter

Converts between 10 data storage units from bits to yottabytes using binary (base-1024) scaling. Enter a value in any unit and see instant conversions to all others. Includes reference tabs covering storage hierarchies, device capacities, common file sizes, and the 3-2-1 backup strategy.

  • 10 units: Bit, Byte, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB, EB, ZB, YB—all using binary (1024-based) conversion factors
  • Conversions route through bits as the base unit for consistent precision
  • Results display up to 6 decimal places for small values, 2 for large values
  • Storage Systems tab: hierarchy from CPU registers to mass storage with speed/capacity benchmarks
  • Applications tab: typical storage usage for smartphones, laptops, gaming consoles, and common file types
  • Management tab: compression techniques, 3-2-1 backup rule, capacity planning guidelines

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this use binary (1024) or decimal (1000) conversion?
Binary. 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes, and so on. This matches how operating systems report storage, but differs from how drive manufacturers advertise capacity (they use decimal, which is why your 1 TB drive shows as ~931 GB).
Why are units like kibibyte (KiB) not shown?
The tool uses the traditional KB/MB/GB notation with binary values, which is how most people and operating systems still refer to storage. IEC binary prefixes (KiB, MiB, GiB) are technically more precise but rarely used outside of technical standards documents.
