About Fabric Calculator

Estimates fabric yardage for sewing projects with built-in presets for six garment types (shirt, dress, pants, skirt, jacket, coat) across six sizes (XS–XXL). For custom projects, enter piece dimensions and count—the calculator determines how many pieces fit across the fabric width and computes total yardage. Adjustable seam allowance and shrinkage percentage are factored into every calculation. Results include yards, meters, estimated cost, and a layout efficiency percentage for custom cuts.

  • Garment presets cover shirt, dress, pants, skirt, jacket, and coat in sizes XS through XXL
  • Supports fabric widths of 36”, 45”, 54”, 60”, and 72”
  • Shrinkage factor (0–20%) and seam allowance are added to the base yardage before output
  • Layout efficiency calculated for custom projects based on how many pieces fit across the bolt width
  • Generates recommendations when efficiency drops below 70%, shrinkage exceeds 10%, or fabric is narrower than 36”

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are the garment presets?
They’re ballpark estimates based on standard yardage charts for 45” fabric. Directional prints, pattern matching, or napped fabrics will need more—add 10–15% manually for those situations.
Does the calculator account for pattern matching or directional prints?
The standard calculation assumes solid or non-directional fabric. For directional prints or patterns that need matching, add 10-15% to the calculated yardage as a buffer. The waste allowance field can be used for this purpose.
